Autism...A Family Affair: A Curriculum for Use with Siblings of Special Needs Children.
Nollette, Cindy Dolby
This volume describes the Sibling Support Program at the Program for Autistic and Other Exceptional Children sponsored by Minneapolis Children's Medical Center, and includes the sibling curriculum used by the program. The curriculum was designed for children aged 4-14 who have siblings with autism or other moderate to severe disorders of interaction, communication, learning, and behavior. The program's six themes aimed to investigate individual and global issues and anxieties as well as some of the pleasures and strengths resulting from having a brother or a sister with a handicapping condition. The themes were: getting to know each other, self-identity and self-esteem, sibling relationships, understanding handicaps, family systems, and concluding discussions and activities. Seventeen sample activities are presented, each including the activity's goal, procedures, time involved, number of participants, and appropriate ages. The volume concludes with staff impressions of the sibling group's experiences and examples of pre- and post-program questionnaires and other survey forms for parents and siblings. (JDD)
