The Gifted: Fiction and Reality of Their Teaching in Tertiary Education.
Kachelhoffer, P. M.
This paper reviews the current status of gifted education in South Africa and makes recommendations for improvements. Characteristics of the gifted and procedures for identifying gifted children are described, emphasizing the importance of identifying the gifted as early as possible. Provisions for differentiated gifted education, as currently implemented in the Transvaal, are outlined along with programs which could be developed. Research on cognitive development is examined, and the impact of the research on educating gifted students is explored. Recommended strategies for accommodating the gifted in tertiary education focus on individualized educational programs, independent learning, and effective teaching. (JDD)
