Good Book Lookers: A Three-Week Introductory Module in the Language Arts To Foster Independent Reading among Third Graders.
Sampson, Anne
Seeking to foster in children a love of books and reading, this 3-week curriculum module is designed to encourage third graders to read independently and to develop an awareness of the intrinsic value of reading by helping students acquire those library skills necessary to access literature, setting up strategies for students to use to assess readability and quality, and introducing them to a broad selection of children's literature. A section on the theoretical rationale for the program discusses research on the effects of independent reading, motivational strategies, the role of parents, and the presentation of library skills. The needs assessment section provides a sample student questionnaire ("How Do I Feel about Books"), along with a sample letter/questionnaire for parents of participating children and for participating librarians, an evaluation form for the needs assessment data, and a book and interest reference form. Instructional objectives (affective, cognitive, and behavioral) are outlined in the module, as well as instructional strategies, including role playing, book talks, and sustained silent reading periods. Other units detail curriculum design, staffing, materials, and scheduling, and the section on evaluation presents a sample library skills quiz, a year-end student assessment form, and teacher, teacher/librarian, and parent evaluation forms. Suggestions for parents are provided in the appendix, and 34 end notes are attached. (MM)
