The Feasibility of Adapting Open University Materials for Use in Polytechnics and Similar Institutions. A CNAA Development Services Project Paper.
Lee, Barry; Bibby, John
This report presents conclusions of a study of the feasibility of adapting Open University materials for use in student-centered learning in other institutions, especially polytechnics. It discusses the development of open learning in the polytechnics, drawing attention to the need for collaborative production of materials. Chapter 1 is an introduction. Chapter 2 discusses the advantages and problems associated with open learning. Chapter 3 explains why Open University material is particularly suitable for adaptation and argues the case for adaptation as opposed to unchanged adoption or writing new material. Chapter 4 demonstrates, through an estimate of likely demand, that adaptation is a viable proposition. An adaptation procedure agreed upon with the Open University is presented in Chapter 5. It discusses problems of copyright, royalties, and updating along with other issues. Chapter 6 makes proposals for printing and publishing the adaptations. The report concludes that the approach proposed represents a potentially major educational initiative that could have a considerable impact on teaching and learning in higher education. It recommends that the initiative be encouraged at the national level through pump-priming funding to establish the first series of adaptations. (YLB)
