Economic Concepts Unit.
Lockledge, Ann
The purpose of this unit is to increase student comprehension of the economic forces at work in regions, states, nations, and the world. Although the unit is intended for North Carolina teachers, it is appropriate for all economic programs. The unit encourages students to examine how geography, available resources, capital investment, and economic activity affect their geographic region. The 19 lessons are activity oriented and are designed to enable students to: (1) use basic economic vocabulary to identify human activity; (2) list ways money is necessary for economic activity; (3) describe how unequal distribution of natural, human, or capital resources can affect economic activity; (4) explain how geographical regions are economically interdependent; and (5) give examples of the relationship among resources, economic activity, and resulting products. The culminating activity involves exploring the economic impact of the exhaustion of an essential resource. Lessons appropriate for each grade level are included in the unit, and each lesson is accompanied by teaching strategies. (SM)
