Mathematics Instruction Grades 4 & 5. Staff Development 1987-1988.
New York City Board of Education, Brooklyn, NY. Div. of Curriculum and Instruction.
This handbook was designed to be used in staff development programs for teachers of fourth and fifth grade mathematics. The program strives to make the teaching and learning of mathematics more meaningful by emphasizing process experiences. Good questioning techniques, problem exploration strategies and the use of manipulative materials are stressed in this program. This project addresses instruction in grades 4 and 5 in an integrated fashion. The design was chosen in an attempt to enrich participants' understanding of the way topics develop through these grades, while at the same time providing the teachers with an opportunity to share insights about bridging students' mathematics learning experiences in the two grades. Included in the guide are background information for the teacher, teaching units and activities, and reproducible handouts and worksheets. (PK)
