An Annotated Bibliography Related to Establishing a Gifted and Talented Program at the Secondary Level with Concentration on Small, Rural Schools.
Moore, Donna
To guide personnel in establishing appropriate gifted/talented programs in small, rural secondary schools, this bibliography provides annotated citations for 29 journal articles and books published from 1968 to 1986 which examine all aspects of gifted education. Annotations are divided into 4 sections: the current status of gifted education in rural communities (6 annotations); program and curriculum options for rural secondary schools (19); research regarding teachers of the gifted (4); and effects of classroom climate on self-concept, creative thinking, and attitudes of gifted secondary students (10). Annotations in the program section are subdivided into the areas of general literature (4 annotations), acceleration (8), independent study (3), mentor programs (3), and seminars (1). A separate bibliography lists sources alphabetically by author. A summary, conclusions, and recommendations are also provided. Recommendations suggest that school personnel should seek community involvement to ensure support, teachers should use acceleration to fit pace to the student's ability, staff should use independent study for individualizing curriculum or when small numbers do not warrant a class, and administrators should assign teachers to gifted classes who feel most comfortable acting in the role of facilitators of learning.
