Kansas Community Colleges' Class of 1987: Five Year Longitudinal Study. Two-Year Interim Report.
Johnson County Community Coll., Overland Park, KS. Office of Institutional Research.
A study was conducted to document the academic and career progress of representative groups of students in all 19 Kansas community colleges from first college entry to experiences after leaving college. In fall 1985, each college randomly selected 50 to 100 representative first-time, full-time freshmen who agreed in writing to complete an initial survey and have their progress toward their educational and career goals monitored over the next 5 years through spring and fall surveys. Study findings for the first 2 years of the study included the following: (1) less than 7% of the respondents expressed dissatisfaction with their overall comunity college experiences at the end of either the first or the second year; (2) less than 5% left college after just one semester, with financial problems being the reason most often cited; (3) over 33% of the respondents to the spring 1987 survey intended to complete an educational program by the end of that semester, with 90% of those expecting to earn an associate degree; (4) slightly more than 12% had transferred to another college by fall 1986; (5) nearly half changed from full- to part-time enrollment status; (6) after 2 years of college, nearly 15% reported earning mostly A's, compared to less than 10% earning mostly A's in high school; and (7) nearly 60% of the fall 1985 respondents were receiving financial aid. Copies of the participant agreement form, the categories utilized for designation of college majors and career preferences, and each of the four surveys administered thus far are appended. (EJV)
