The "Discipline" of English in the Eighties. Working Papers in Distance Education, No. 6.
Castan, Con, Comp.
Three papers given at a seminar on the state of the "discipline" of English are presented which form an introduction to an analysis of the activity of "teaching and researching English" as it is currently being done at Queensland University (Australia) and others. Following an introduction summarizing the background of the seminar and the topics discussed: In "English as a Discipline," K. G. Hamilton describes the development of the present English curriculum over the past 30 years and possible future developments for English education. "The "Discipline' of English," by Dan O'Neill discusses the international development of English studies over the past two centuries and suggests future changes, including a "Copernican revolution" in the relationship between literary criticism and history that currently exists in English studies. In "The Future of English: A Contribution," M. Hollington discusses recent developments in the broader field of literary studies. There was consensus among the seminar participants on several points; e.g., that the present diversity is good; that the department should be renamed the Department of Literary Scholarship and Criticism and that it should deal primarily with literature written in English; and that the framework of literary studies be broadened to include other aspects of culture.
