Jobs for the Future.
Business and Professional Women's Foundation, Washington, DC.; Women's Bureau (DOL), Washington, DC.
This guide is intended to assist women in selecting and preparing for occupations that will either be in demand or continue to be in demand in the future. The first part is a guide to evaluating an occupation. It covers the following topics: costs and benefits (skills needed, training requirements, availability of training, costs of training, salary ranges, and career mobility); job availability (number of persons employed and projected job growth, geographic concentration, industries, occupational interest groups); and working conditions (traditional versus path-breaking jobs, work schedules, degree of supervision received, contact with the public and/or coworkers, and health and safety considerations). Part 2 provides information on the costs and benefits, job availability, and working conditions of 30 selected occupations, subdividing them into jobs that generally require a high school diploma or an associate, bachelor's, or advanced degree. The third part, a guide to resources available for use in researching an occupation, covers the following topics: obtaining basic sources of information on occupations and occupationally based organizations, getting information about job trends and possibilities in local geographic areas, identifying good training programs for particular fields, finding out how to earn credit for experiential learning, knowing one's employment rights, being aware of day care and family support systems, finding out about health and safety in the workplace, knowing what steps to take in the event of sexual harassment, and acquiring a realistic image of the workplace. A list of references is appended. (MN)
