Consumer Mathematics, Vol. II. Computer Applications.
New York City Board of Education, Brooklyn, NY. Div. of Curriculum and Instruction.
This document serves as Volume II of a two-part course designed to improve mathematical proficiency and understanding as the student is given practice in relevant problem-solving situations. It includes the mathematics skills needed to make sound consumer decisions. The purpose of this course is to review, reinforce and extend concepts learned in the Fundamentals of Mathematics course. The focus of this course is on solving consumer-related problems. The use of a calculator is highly encouraged to allow the student to concentrate on the concept, rather than on computation. Volume II of Consumer Mathematics contains computer applications for many of the topics contained in Volume I. The lessons involve using electronic spreadsheets and applying them to real-life situations. The electronic spreadsheets can be used for teaching problem solving as well as for the study and implementation of algorithms. Teachers may choose to integrate these lessons into the corresponding units from Volume I or they may choose to teach the lessons from Volume II after completing Volume I. (Author/PK)
