An Annotated Bibliography about AIDS for Educators of the Life Sciences.
Person, Mark A.
This study was conducted to identify information about Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS) that educators should know to effectively teach about the disease in the classroom. The references identified were divided into seven major categories: (1) current scientific research concerned with the virus that causes AIDS; (2) the effects of the AIDS virus on its victim; (3) modes by which AIDS can be transmitted; (4) current studies concerned with the prevention of AIDS and control of the AIDS epidemic; (5) statistics concerned with the spread of AIDS in the United States and, more specifically, within Indiana; (6) common misconceptions and the apprehension that exists in society; and (7) the need for public and institutional education about AIDS. The literature review indicated that if teachers are to effectively teach students about AIDS in the classroom they need to know the biological nature of the virus, the specific modes by which it can be transmitted, and the means that can be used to prevent the transmission of the disease.
