A guide for Kansas foreign language teachers contains general information about language teaching techniques, materials, and needs, and specific proficiency-based objectives for three instructional levels (novice, intermediate, and advanced). It is not language-specific and does not advocate a particular methodology, but is designed to answer common questions and concerns. Chapters address: the value of language study, careers using second languages, cultural enrichment, international exchange programs, public relations, pedagogical methods and approaches, basic language skills, foreign languages in elementary schools (FLES), language proficiency, the American Council for the Teaching of Foreign Languages (ACTFL) Proficiency Guidelines, state proficiency-based objectives based on the ACTFL guidelines, the scope and sequence of grammar and syntax instruction, program and curriculum evaluation, teacher self-evaluation, student course evaluation, student testing, suggestions for textbook evaluation, materials and equipment, and professional organizations. The curriculum guides for French, German and Spanish, which supplement this volume, suggest specific classroom activities that should contribute to meeting those proficiency-based objectives at the beginning, intermediate and advanced levels.
