Art for the Middle School. Curriculum Bulletin, 1977-78 Series, No. 3.
Hochman, Shirley
The elements and principles of design are taught through art experiences which are built upon pupil interest. A range of suggested activities makes it possible for teachers to plan lessons that meet the needs of each student. Each chapter includes activities appropriate for varying student ability levels. The focus of activities in grades five and six clusters about the child's home, family, friends, school, work, and play. Art activities in grades seven and eight emphasize the urban scene. Pupil response is an essential ingredient in every art lesson with open-ended activities directed toward this goal. Each of the 10 chapters in the guide presents a different art medium, including: (1) drawing and painting; (2) weaving, stitchery, and collages; (3) constructing from paper, clay, wood, and plastic; (4) stenciling and screen printing; (5) lettering, postermaking, and advertising; (6) making puppets; (7) photographing; (8) filmmaking; and (9) designing costumes. Chapter 10 explores the relationship between the arts, and chapter 11 introduces the aesthetic use of space in the environment (i.e., architecture and city design). Chapter 12 provides self-directed activities for advanced students. The illustrations include many photographs. A bibliography is appended. (SM)
