Alternative Instructional Materials for the Learning Disabled.
Freeman, Sharon
A study examined alternative instructional materials and strategies for learning disabled college students and strategies for locating and mainstreaming these students. Site visits were made to programs for learning-disabled college students in the Houston, Texas, area to determine their scope and the strategies that they used. Additional information was collected from members of the Western College Reading and Language Association and from college and high school programs throughout Texas. Tape recorders, tape-recorded textbooks, calculators, typewriters, and computers with sound capabilities appeared to be the most commonly used and were effective alternative instructional materials. Notetakers, alternative testing procedures, and tutoring programs were determined to be the most effective strategies for aiding learning-disabled students. In the second phase of the project, 10 students were selected for a special 6-week study skills class and for additional group and individual counseling concerning their future college and life goals. They also received instruction in compensatory techniques and coping skills for college. (Appendixes include a chart of services offered by the responding colleges, a brochure on learning disabilities with suggestions for working with learning-disabled college students, a list of selected organizations and resources, checklists on learning disabled students, a newspaper article on learning disabilities, learning style preference forms, guidelines for college survival skills, handouts compiled for the workshop, and a list of publishers of Apple II GS software.)
