This curriculum guide provides materials for a competency-based course in medical office receptionist/assistant at the secondary level. The curriculum design uses the curriculum infused model for the teaching of basic skills as part of vocational education and demonstrates the relationship of vocationally related skills to communication, mathematics, and science knowledge. Basic skills matrices are provided that indicate the curriculum in which each skill is studied. A list of course objectives precedes the curriculum. Course materials are divided into units, each of which correlates task, theory, communication skills, mathematics skills, science knowledge, and student outcomes. Units include safety in the medical office, career opportunities, job opportunities, professional status, career qualifications, professional conduct, medical law and ethics, telephone procedures, appointment control, emergency patients, recall system, referrals, meeting the patients, health insurance, workmen's compensation, medical specialties, anatomical descriptors and fundamental body structure, systems of the human body, records management, office mail, medical records, office management equipment, financial responsibilities, financial management, instruments used in the medical practice, asepsis, autoclave, beginning the database, vital signs, general physical examination, microscope, blood tests, specimen collection, and diagnostic tests.
