This curriculum guide is intended to assist vocational instructors in preparing students for entry-level employment as homemakers/home health aides and getting them ready for advanced training in the workplace. The package contains a competency/skill and task list, an instructor's guide, and an annotated bibliography. The following competencies are covered: identifying the functions of home care agencies and supportive personnel; demonstrating ethical/legal behavior and providing a positive image as a health care worker; communicating effectively; understanding human development and age-related problems; using safe body mechanics; maintaining a safe and clean home environment; providing or assisting with personal care; observing, measuring, and recording clients' physical conditions; planning, preparing, and serving meals to promote health and satisfaction; laundering, changing, and caring for household linens and clothing; providing activities for developing personal independence; safely operating, cleaning and storing household equipment; assisting with homemaking tasks and diagnostic measures; providing basic emergency care in the home, personal care, and therapeutic measures; and caring for dying clients. The instructor's guide consists of a series of task sheets, each of which includes some or all of the following: competency/skill statement; task statement; performance objectives (including conditions in which the task is to be performed, evaluation criteria, and an evaluation standard); suggested student learning experiences; recommended instructional techniques; instructional equipment, materials, and supplies needed to complete the lesson; and recommended resources.
