Piaget and Bandura: The Need for a Unified Theory of Learning.
Moore, Stanley W.
A complete learning model will merge the Piagetian and Banduran learning models into a unified, comprehensive model to explain individual diversity. This argument is based upon analysis of the first five years of data gathered from a 13-year longitudinal study. The data from grades 5-12 are still in the analysis process, but impressionistic observation made from those data are included in the author's argument. The study concerning political socialization theory was designed to fill in these gaps: (1) little is known about civic awareness growth among pupils below the fourth and fifth grade; (2) few longitudinal studies have been done to accurately track a "pattern" of growing political awareness; and (3) there is a need to test the hypothesis that different periods in history may produce different patterns of political organization. Also, both models of learning theory, Piagetian and Banduran, were tested. The data give evidence that those political phenomena involving a high level of abstraction are most easily grasped when the cognitive-developmental hurdle is surmounted at the same time that the child's immediate environment also contains relevant stimuli. The study appears to offer a better understanding of the ways that cognitive maturation and environmental stimuli may work together to produce significant advances in political understanding. Both models are useful for explaining growth in political understanding. (SM)
