Amityville: An Overview.
Howlett, Charles F., Ed.; And Others
Journal of Historical Inquiry, v7 1987
Secondary level student historians used oral history interviews, local records, newspapers, and personal events to depict the story of their town, Amityville, New York. Students chose their own topics, researched available materials, and wrote the papers. Many of the articles are enhanced with interesting local photography. An illuminating picture of the founding families is presented through personal interviews and study of local records and materials. Papers on government, the fire and police departments, the school system and its athletic program, and the village library offer historical insights and observations. Architectural development and change was chronicled through papers dealing with the Grand Old Hotels, the seven sites designated as historical landmarks, and the changes in homes from early American to bungalow styles. Local transportation was surveyed in papers on the railroad and the streets. The contributions of the Dominican Sisters of Queen of the Rosary of Amityville were recognized through an investigation of the origins of the order. (SM)
