This guide for expectant and new working parents addresses practical and emotional issues that complicate the task of balancing work and family. Chapter 1, which addresses maternity and paternity leave, and the Pregnancy Disability Act, provides information regarding preparation for maternity leave after childbirth. Included are a worksheet to aid the negotiation and planning of a leave and suggestions for making the most of a leave. Chapter 2 explores aspects of deciding to work. Chapter 3 identifies concerns shared by new working parents, including those related to guilt, family relationships, breastfeeding, and working. Chapter 4, which concerns the search for high quality infant day care, probes the issues of whether substitute care is harmful or helpful; what constitutes high quality infant day care; what the available types of infant day care are; and how to get coworkers involved in day care. Provided are a guide to finding day care and checklists for evaluating day care facilities and providers. Chapter 5 offers a strategy for time and energy management. "Reality tamers" found effective by working parents are suggested. A discussion on ways to recognize sources of stress and find methods of coping is provided. Chapter 6 covers interpersonal survival skills. Chapter 7 addresses issues raised by expectant and new working fathers. Appendices provide lists of resources and readings. (RH)
