Measures of Progress: Spring 1985 Student Follow-Up.
Lee, Beth S.
In spring 1985, the Los Rios Community College District surveyed 4,084 former students who had attended one of the district's three colleges in fall 1983 or spring 1984. The study sought information on the former students' characteristics, primary educational goals, major programs of study, employment/educational status, and reasons for not re-enrolling in one of the district colleges (American River College, Cosumnes River College, or Sacramento City College). Questionnaires were sent to all 1983-84 graduates and certificate earners, as well as to certain nongraduate/nonreturning students. Study findings, based on data from 2,033 respondents (an adjusted response rate of 52.7%), include the following: (1) the graduates who received associate degrees in general education or liberal arts majors (32.4% of the respondents) included the largest percentage of females (nearly 63%) and of ethnic minorities (almost 27%), and were the youngest group, with an average age of 28 years; (2) among the occupational program graduates (36.1% of the respondents), more than 65% had enrolled in a community college primarily to prepare for a new job, 84% were employed, 11% had transferred to a four-year college by the time of the study, and 37% had majored in health technology fields; and (3) the 31.5% of the respondents who had completed an advanced occupational course but received no degree tended to be older, more often were employed full-time, were more likely to have enrolled to upgrade job skills, and were more likely to have been employed in their field before attending school. The survey instrument is included in the appendix, as well as a chart displaying awards granted and survey responses, by community college major. (EJV)
