Teachers of Technical Communication in Two-Year Colleges: A Status Report.
Angelo, Faye; Pickett, Nell Ann
A study focused on technical communication teachers in two-year institutions nationwide, expanding a previous study (1984-85) concerning the teaching of technical communication in two-year colleges. "Contact persons" at 100 colleges randomly selected from a list of 565 extracted from the previous study, completed a questionnaire and distributed questionnaires to all persons (including part-time faculty) who teach technical communication in their college. Results indicated that the composite technical communication teacher in a two-year college (1) teaches in an institution with a semester, rank, and tenure system; (2) is likely to be a tenured associate or full professor and teaching full time; (3) has undergraduate and graduate degrees in English; (4) earns $24,500; (5) is middle-aged; (6) is as likely to be female as male; and (7) is Caucasian. Findings also show that these teachers earn considerably lower salaries than their colleagues in other disciplines, and have extensive classroom experience and heavy work loads. They view experience in the workplace as helpful in teaching, but participate infrequently in professional application of technical communication (publishing, editing, consulting, or giving presentations), though they participate frequently in informal development activities. The ranks of technical communication teachers include extremely qualified part-time teachers, and overall they seem to be hard-working, dedicated persons committed to the teaching of technical communication. (Fifteen tables of data, references, and a sample questionnaire are appended.) (NKA)
