CARE, Changing Attitudes Regarding Education.
Duval County Schools, Jacksonville, FL.
Changing Attitudes Regarding Education (CARE) is a program for the elementary school level which seeks to heighten educators' awareness of student attitudes toward education that are not conducive to an ongoing learning process. The goals of the program are accomplished using a team approach. The school principal is a member of the team and appoints the other members who usually are the referring teacher, a classroom teacher, a guidance counselor and parents. This team has meetings at least every nine weeks at which it takes referrals, proposes plans of action and reviews student progress. This report outlines the guidelines for such a team and reviews the types of prevention/intervention techniques which may be proposed. The following examples of some CARE documents are included in the report: (1) a referral form to be completed by the referring person; (2) an individual reporting form to be completed by the team recorder; and (3) the CARE referral log to be completed by the team recorder. This program design may be applicable for dropout prevention programs in secondary schools. (VM)
