Staff Development Project--Science. Grades K-6.
Brown, Iva D.; And Others
This manual was designed for use in conducting staff development sessions for elementary school teachers of science in Mississippi in grades K-6. Included in the document are activities that were intended to model, where possible, exemplary teaching practices based upon research related to the cognitive development of children. Ten topics are treated in this manual. The number of instructional hours necessary for completing the workshop activities for each topic varies from 2 to 12 hours. It is recommended that topics 1 through 3 be presented in sequence. Topic 1 establishes the rationale for hands-on science, drawing upon research related to how children learn. Topic 2 introduces the basic processes of science, which should be emphasized in kindergarten through third grade in preparation for work with the integrated processes (topic 3) in the upper elementary grades. The remaining seven sections deal with: (1) teacher questioning techniques; (2) evaluation; (3) effective use of textbook materials; (4) the acquisition and management of elementary school science materials; (5) the outdoors as an extension of the classroom; (6) an interdisciplinary approach to teaching science; and (7) classroom management and safety in elementary school science. Curricular materials on magnets and graphing are presented in two appendixes. (TW)
