Implementation of an Activity Oriented Laboratory Science Program for Grades 4, 5, and 6. 1985-86.
Washington School District, Phoenix, AZ.
In an effort to improve the science education program in the Washington School District (Phoenix, Arizona) the school system focused its efforts in the 1983-84 school year on the development of an activity oriented laboratory science program for grades 4-6. This document describes the plan for implementing that program. The implementation strategies focused on seven administrative standard operational procedures. These include: (1) providing laboratory facilities for all students in grades 4-6; (2) staffing of science classes with trained science teachers; (3) following a science scope and sequence; (4) following science assessment and pacing guides; (5) developing and using a teacher-developed district laboratory handbook; (6) monitoring of pupil progress through basic skills tests; and (7) devoting a minimum of 300 minutes per six-day schedule to science instruction, including a minimum of 50 percent of that time devoted to hands-on laboratory activities. Thirteen appendices are included to provide clarity and background information to statements made in this report. (TW)
