Adult Training and Retraining for Single Parents and Homemakers. A Vocational Project to Assist Single Parents and Homemakers to Pursue Careers as Nursing Assistants. Final Report from September 1986 through June 1987.
Hernando County School Board, Brooksville, FL.
A program was developed to provide single parents who were without marketable skills with the training or retraining necessary to secure and keep a job in the health care field. During the course of the project, 31 trainees between the ages of 21 and 60 who were living below the poverty level were recruited into the program. They received classroom instruction and participated in a two-week practicum at a health care institution under the supervision of a registered nurse. Twenty-eight of the 31 students recruited into the program completed it and were placed into health care jobs. Despite attempts to recruit comparable numbers of males and females, only two males entered the program (one of whom dropped out after the third week). Because of their participation in the program, the program completers managed to secure jobs netting them more income than they could have received on welfare. The program will be continued for another year, at which time additional emphasis will be placed on recruiting increased numbers of males. (The 10-page project report is followed by a course outline for home health aides, a sample school/hospital cooperative agreement, a participant intake form, and information on eligibility for state assistance programs.)
