Brown to Buckley: A Study of Desegregation, Integration, and Student Attitudes in Seven Marion County, Indiana School Districts. A Research Study.
Harris, J. John, III; And Others
This report presents results of the first year of a three-year study analyzing the effects of school desegregation/integration on black and white pupils enrolled in the public schools of Indianapolis, Indiana, and surrounding suburban school districts within Marion County. This longitudinal study will survey resident and non-resident students in grades 3, 5, 7, 9, and 11 at three data collection points. It is a cooperative venture involving students, parents, community leaders, local educators, and higher education. The findings so far indicate that Marion County Schools have taken seriously the task of providing a school atmosphere which fosters positive interracial attitudes. Both black and white students maintain positive feelings toward school, and see classroom organization and structure as facilities for learning. Also, both black and white students maintain a positive sense of self-worth. The study found that interracial attitudes are more likely an outcome of school atmosphere than a cause. The report includes a bibliography, recommendations, information on the authors, and appendices with the survey instruments and tables. (PS)
