How to Teach Mathematics Using a Calculator. Activities for Elementary and Middle School.
Coburn, Terrence
The National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) has stated that mathematics programs should take full advantage of the power of calculators at all grade levels. This recommendation urges that students be provided access to calculators, and that calculator use be integrated into the core mathematics curriculum on a regular basis. This booklet provides examples of how the calculator can be used as an instructional tool in elementary and middle schools. It demonstrates how the calculator can be used to assist in the development of concepts, help reinforce skills, promote higher-level thinking, and enhance problem-solving instruction. The document contains: (1) a brief discussion of some of the important instructional uses of the calculator; (2) considerations for selecting calculators for the classroom; (3) activity pages, grouped by mathematical skill; (4) teacher notes for each activity (including the purpose, appropriate grade range, calculator keys used, and an answer key); and (5) sample tests with an answer key. The sample tests can be used for pretesting and posttesting students. The activity pages are perforated for duplication for classroom use. (TW)
