Training and Utilizing Volunteers as Docents to Assist in the Nova Cedargrove Children's Museum.
Hughes, Donna J.
This document reports on a doctoral-level practicum designed to train volunteers as docents to assist in the programs of the NOVA Children's Museum located on the Cedargrove School campus (Covina, California). Docents were found to be essential for more in-depth science learning to take place during hands-on museum experiences which promote the inquiry method of learning. The goals of the project were to: (1) increase the use of volunteers as docents by conducting training sessions in the science skills and concepts represented in the museum; (2) provide the opportunity for kindergarten through fifth grade students from the local school district to manipulate/use a multitude of science materials exhibited in the museum with a pullout program; and (3) increase the amount of knowledge gained in specific areas of scientific exploration by the students in the museum. Results indicated that all of the participants in the docent training sessions regarded the inservice training as valuable, informative, and beneficial in their work in the museum. In addition, 100% of the 290 students involved in the NOVA program attended the regularly scheduled visits/classes, and the students did increase their scientific knowledge. (Author/TW)
