An Intra Population Analysis of Migrant Student Performance Based on the Migrant Student Record Transfer System Data Base.
Hackett, Eugene de G.; McManus, James V.
Educational services data contained in the Migrant Student Record Transfer System (MSRTS) database were used to examine some effects of the migrant education program on student performance, and how student performance varied with the amount and duration of exposure to general and particular program components. Problems with using the MSRTS database for research were the absence of control groups and non-continuity of student data and the program. Reading, Language and Arithmetic sections of the Comprehensive Tests of Basic Skills and Reading and Arithmetic sections of the California Achievement Test scores were used to divide data into two groups: below grade and at/above grade. Data were analyzed using simple polynomial, multiple regressions, analysis of variance, and the General Least Squares Method. Independent variables were entry age, migrant status, grade level, test type, and reading, mathematics and arithmetic skills. Fifteen experimental sets were organized to measure various aspects of the program. Some findings were that migrant status, test types, and grade level produced significant differences in student performance; and entry age and grade level were highly correlated. Appendices include a discussion of the variables, population, tests, procedures, and results for each set; information on the population and samples; and an instructions manual containing statistical tables.
