Arts Education in American Community Colleges. Interim Report.
Center for the Study of Community Colleges, Los Angeles, CA.
The study described in this report was conducted by the Center for the Study of Community Colleges to assess the status of two-year college education in the fine and performing arts. Part I includes a review of available literature on arts education at community colleges and relates that literature to issues raised by others writing about arts education at high schools and universities. The review focuses on: (1) arts education at the elementary and secondary levels; (2) postsecondary issues, including the degree to which the arts and arts faculty have been integrated into the college and university community and the degree to which the arts serve various educative functions; and (3) arts education as part of the community college's transfer, community service, vocational education, and general education functions. Part II presents the methodology and initial findings of a student survey designed to ascertain students' reasons for enrolling in arts education programs, the extent of their past and present involvement, their most likely future involvement, and their satisfaction with the programs. Finally, part III includes a classification scheme and tally of credit courses offered in the fine and performing arts in community colleges nationwide. Within this section, tables display the percent of classes offered in the visual arts, dance, music, and theater and in each sub-area within those fields; and show the percent of classes that carry prerequisites. Specifications for the course counts are also included. (EJV)
