The Academic Library and Education for Leadership.

As education for leadership becomes increasingly important, the role of the academic library should assume new dimensions, and the library should become a major vehicle for leadership education. An examination of the library-related recommendations in the report of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, "College--the Undergraduate Experience in America," as an exposition of the academic library's role in citizenship and leadership education reveals that this traditional thinking is too conventional and limiting. Alternative recommendations for academic libraries in harmony with the report but more creative in their approach include: offering general undergraduate research and methods elective courses taught by librarians that would expose students to the total information environment of an unfamiliar discipline; establishing an "Information Amphitheater" designed to demonstrate the vital role of information in the local, national, and global decision-making environment; conducting programs to promote and illuminate the "culture of information"; supplying ample funds for the acquisition of non-print materials as well as books; and participating in library consortia to design projects that the general public might utilize. A bold approach to the practical implementation of such new ideas and concepts will aid in the development of effective leaders. (KM)
