Orientierungsveranstaltungen zur Benutzerschulung in Kleingruppen: Sechs Jahre im Uberblick. (Orientation Tours for Library User Instruction in Small Groups: A Six Years Review). Report UBTUW-86-008.
Oberhauser, Otto
This report summarizes the experience of the university library of the Technische Universitat Wien (University of Technology, Vienna, Austria) in offering one-hour orientation lectures, including guided tours of the library, to groups (up to 15) of new library users at the beginning of each winter term for the past six years. The design of the courses is described; a listing of cognitive and affective teaching goals is provided; and statistical data are presented on the number of courses conducted each year, development of the total number of participants, subject disciplines of the participants, and librarians presenting the lectures. It is concluded by library management that, although teaching small groups requires more personnel, it is a more efficient method than presenting orientation lectures to large audiences. A brief evaluation survey conducted in 1982 is also cited as showing that most participants liked the courses. In addition, the important future implications of these experiences are considered in light of the library's planned 1987 move to a new building, which will evoke new and increasing needs for user orientation and instruction. The text is supplemented with four graphs; a 15-item bibliography is provided; and materials and handouts used for the courses are appended. (Author/KM)
