A rationale for the inclusion of training in computer-assisted instruction (CAI) in teacher education programs at both preservice and inservice levels is presented. The nature of teacher training in computer-assisted language learning (CALL) is described through a variety of examples. Areas covered include: the need for an understanding of the potential applications of CALL in the learning process; the need for teacher training in CALL as reflected in the literature; training teachers in theory and technical knowledge; the kinds of CAI and CALL currently available; and questions raised by those using CALL and the proposed answers to those questions. An outline of useful topics to be covered in a teacher training course in CALL is presented. CALL courses for teachers should include familiarity with the history of microcomputers, with technology, and with educational concerns regarding the use of CALL. (CB)
