Yes You Can! A Booklet to Help Young People with Learning Disabilities Understand and Help Themselves. Revised Edition.
East, Joanne
Intended for students with learning problems, this booklet is designed to help the student deal with his/her learning disability. Presented in simple language and cartoon-like illustrations, this publication addresses the causes of and misconceptions about learning problems, how it feels to have a learning disability, what can be done, and where to go for help. The first section names famous people, including Thomas Edison, Beethoven, and Bruce Jenner, who overcame learning problems. Section 2 defines learning problems. The third section emphasizes the importance of individual differences. Section 4 discusses the causes of learning problems. Section 5 suggests techniques for dealing with various learning problems, such as using a computer and a calculator, studying spelling in different ways, typing work, answering essay questions on a tape recorder, and working behind a screen. Section 6 considers attitudes of family and friends toward children with learning disabilities. The seventh section presents learning-disabled students' descriptions of themselves and the ways they have dealt with their disability. A 17-item resource list is included. (CB)
