Grande Prairie Listening Tests: Teachers' Manuals. Language Arts Product Evaluation.
Grande Prairie School District No. 2357 (Alberta).
A two-year study designed to evaluate an elementary language arts program in the Grande Prairie School District (Edmonton, Alberta) through an assessment of student achievement was conducted from 1983 to 1985. A major focus of the study was the area of listening, and the listening tests and teacher's manuals presented in this document are intended to provide guidance for planning, implementing, and evaluating the instructional program in listening for grades one through four. The teacher's manuals provide background information on the study as well as objectives for and information on the accompanying tests. The tests are designed to assess, with varying emphases at each grade level, literal as well as inferential/critical comprehension objectives, including (1) identifying main idea, (2) matching/comparing details, (3) making judgments/drawing conclusions, and (4) predicting details/outcomes. In addition, the tests measure comprehension of both spontaneous and prepared spoken language, as well as written language read orally. Tables providing selected data analysis from the field studies of the test are included in the teacher's manuals for each grade level in order to indicate ceiling levels. Means, standard deviations and item results obtained from the six schools involved in the study are also provided. Further information on the interpretation of tables, as well as additional findings of the study are provided in the study's final report. (JG)
