Increasing Parent Satisfaction of Children's Therapy through an Audio-Visual Investigation of Reactions to Children's Aggressive, Assertive or Passive Anger Responses.
Anderson, Fay B.
This document presents a practicum designed to address the problems encountered when a child in nondirective play therapy becomes able to express emotions and parents, unable to accept their child's new expressions of anger, withdraw the child from therapy at a time when he or she is most vulnerable. The development and implementation of a program to reduce the incidence of unexpected and premature withdrawal of children from individual therapy is described. A strategy is discussed in which parents: (1) listened to audiotapes of children reacting angrily in three different ways (passively, aggressively, assertively), followed by supportive/assertive parent-model responses; (2) rated how angry they would be if their child made such a response; and (3) volunteered to record child-anger occurrences at home. An evaluation of the program is discussed which showed that parents favored assertive child-anger responses over aggressive or passive ones, but that children who viewed videotapes of child models responding assertively to anger provocations felt unable to accept such behavior as their own. It is recommended that directive child training be offered in the presence of parents. The report concludes that, following the program, the incidence of children remaining in therapy beyond the period of vulnerability increased. Relevant program materials, including eight vignettes from the audiotape script in which children give assertive responses, are appended. (Author/NB)
