Teach Someone to Read. A Step-by-Step Guide for Literacy Tutors, Including Diagnostic Phonics and Comprehension Assessments.
Rosenthal, Nadine
This guide gives new tutors who are not professional teachers some techniques for teaching others to read and write. A comprehension-based approach to literacy training is used. Part 1 presents a variety of background information on illiteracy. It also gives some guidelines useful for the new tutor. Part 2 is composed of two diagnostic assessments: the Rosenthal Diagnostic Phonics Assessment and the Rosenthal Diagnostic Comprehension Assessment. Part 3 forms a manual of useful tutoring techniques. Chapter 1 sets forth guidelines for lesson planning. Chapter 2 focuses on comprehension development--reading to learn. It shows how to select reading topics, find appropriate reading materials on these topics, expand the topics, question the student to improve comprehension, train the student to ask questions, and teach study skills. Chapter 3 focuses on word recognition--learning to read. It includes these methods for teaching basic reading and writing skills: sight-word, phonics, syllabications, and language-experience techniques. Other skills fundamental to the reading process--vocabulary, spelling, and writing skills--are also addressed. A variety of development and reinforcement skills for each skills area is included. Part 4 tells how to obtain information about literacy programs and gives lists of reference materials and publishers of reading materials. (YLB)
