This study was designed to develop a profile of the 1983-84 graduates of Oregon schools and colleges of education one year after completion of their programs. A 42-item questionnaire was sent to 1,821 graduates with a 65 percent return rate. Five major topics served as the basis for development of the profile: (1) demographic and certification information; (2) employment status one year after program completion; (3) importance of 25 selected competencies and skills to the assignment of those graduates employed in a school; (4) the adequacy of preparation of graduates employed in a school in these 25 competencies and skills; and (5) conditions of beginning service for those graduates employed in a school. Information was also sought on job searching and employment status, types of assignments, and job changes after one year of teaching. The self-reported perceptions of graduates formed the primary data base for the study. Data are presented on tables accompanied by narrative commentary. (JD)
