Australia's International Relations in Education. Australian Education Review, Number 23.
Jones, Phillip W.
The past five to ten years have seen a steady, if not spectacular, growth in the arrival of overseas students to study in Australia, the use of education in the Australian foreign aid program, and the range of international contacts enjoyed by Australian educators in their work. In particular, the years 1983 to 1985 have seen a flurry of activity, notably at the national governmental level, but it is not easy to piece together the principal trends or even to document all the significant events. While the present review seeks to remedy this lack of analysis, it does not pretend to provide anything but a summary of the key elements. It does seek identification of significant structural factors, and how these relate to broader social and cultural themes. Chapters include: "Education in the Australian Bilateral Aid Program"; "Multilateral and Regional Cooperation in Education"; "Overseas Students in Australia"; "International Links: The Exchange of Educational Ideas, Materials and Personnel"; and "Emerging Issues." Discussed in the latter chapter are the following subtopics: Education for Export, English Language in the Region, Australian Studies Overseas, and The Overseas Promotion of Australian Education.
