Hispanics in Wisconsin, 1980: A Chartbook. A Demographic Profile of the Hispanic and Total Population in Wisconsin. Population Series 80-5.
Basurto, Elia; And Others
Economic, educational, social, and housing patterns existing among the entire Hispanic population and among the different Hispanic heritage groups (Mexican, Puerto Rican, Cuban, etc.) in Wisconsin were examined using data from the 1980 Census of Population and Housing. Data showed that of the 63,000 Hispanics living in Wisconsin in 1980, 65% were Mexican, 17% Puerto Rican, 2% Cuban, and 17% Other; most Hispanics lived in the urban areas of 7 southeastern counties; 11.2 years was the median education level among Hispanic adults; 30% of Hispanics aged 16-21 never completed high school and were not enrolled in school; 22% of Hispanic adults had attended college, compared to 29% for the total adult population; nearly one-fifth of the Hispanic population lived in poverty, compared to 9% of all persons in Wisconsin; and a higher proportion of Puerto Rican families lived in poverty, compared to Mexican, Cuban, and other Hispanic groups. Forty-seven bar and pie charts and maps provide statistical data on residence patterns, identification, age and sex, families and households, education, language spoken, income, poverty status, labor force participation, and housing. A brief paragraph highlights the main points of each chart. Fifteen tables provide more detailed numeric data on selected topics. (JMM)
