University Training and Career Opportunities, 1985. Report MM-115. Fifth Edition. HSRG Guidance Series GS-5.
Geggus, Caroline
Information on university study and possible careers is provided to secondary school students and counselors in South Africa. Information is presented on degrees, diplomas, and certificates awarded by 18 South African universities; entrance requirements of universities and degree programs; and the length of courses and major subjects required for degrees, particularly three types of bachelor's degrees (Bachelor of Art, Bachelor of Commerce, and Bachelor of Science). Descriptions of each field of study are included. It is noted that university admission is controlled by the Joint Matriculation Board (JMB), and that successful candidates for JMB's matriculation examination may be awarded either a school-leaving certificate or a Matriculation Certificate. In addition, possible occupations for most of the study fields are briefly described. Information is also provided on institutions that generally employ persons with the qualifications that are identified. Included are an index of occupations and/or study fields, and the addresses of universities, technikons, government departments, and other institutions that could provide the user with more information on training or job opportunities.
