Behavior Disorders in Schools: A Practical Guide to Identification, Assessment and Correction.
Alberta Dept. of Education, Edmonton. Special Educational Services Branch.
Intended for teachers, this guide defines behavior disorders and discusses their identification and assessment as well as classroom strategies. The first section, a user guide, considers placement alternatives for students with special education needs and provides an overview of the material presented in the remainder of the manual. Section I introduces the concept of behavior disorders. Section II addresses identification, assessment, and program planning for students with behavior disorders, including an identification checklist and summary. A seven-step model for assessment, program planning, and evaluation is presented. The model's seven steps include: organization of background information; identification and application of expectations; organization of assessment information; summary of assessment information; establishment of corrective strategy; implementation of corrective strategy; and evaluation of corrective strategy. The third section describes classroom strategies, including: prevention of behavior disorders; strategies for mild behavior disorders; strategies for severe behavior disorders; and selection and implementation of classroom strategies. The fourth section lists social service agencies and organizations. Related teacher resources and a bibliography appear at the end of each of these four sections. Appendices consist of a glossary of terms related to behavior disorders; specific examples of behavior disorders by degree of disruption/level of security; the Identification Checklist and Summary Form; and Assessment and Program Planning Forms.
