The Principalship: A Reflective Practice Perspective.
Sergiovanni, Thomas J.
The reflective practice of principalship differs from other ways of practicing principalship by viewing the principal's problems as unique rather than as standard problems susceptible to standardized solutions. This book provides information, raises questions, and considers the complexities of school problems, all as raw material for the reflective principal to use when developing the informed intuition required for successful educational leadership. The book is divided into five parts, each with several chapters. Part 1 examines the principalship from a number of perspectives, including roles, expectations, success factors, and characteristics of leadership. The purpose and mission of schooling are the foci of part 2; the development, administration, and evaluation of effective educational programs are discussed. Part 3 treats teacher supervision and evaluation from the reflective principal's perspective. The fourth part explores the development of human resources, including such aspects as teacher motivation, school climate, school improvement, management, and organizational effectiveness. Part 5 draws on all of the book's themes to discuss the concept of leadership. Inventories and questionnaires are presented throughout the book as guides to thought. References and informational appendices are included for each chapter, and an index is provided for the book as a whole. (PGD)
