The Indiana School Principalship: The Role of the Indiana Principal as Defined by the Principal.
Gousha, Richard P.
The public's demand for improvement of schools; the concern, debate, and inquiry about the principal's role; and the importance of principals' own views about their activities emphasize the need to enhance the body of knowledge about public school principals. This study utilized a 14-page questionnaire grouped into the following sections: (1) working environment of the principal; (2) demographic characteristics of the principal, reasons for becoming a principal, work experience and salary; (3) educational preparation, certification and professional growth; (4) task roles performed by the principal, including ranking of current and idealized roles; and (5) level of satisfaction with schools, education in the state, and career goals. Information from 630 respondents statewide was categorized according to school environment, school grade level, geographic region, and school size. Recommendations include a redefinition of a core curriculum for principal certification, a revision of an evaluation plan measuring administrative performance, an examination of underrepresentation of minorities and women, and an ongoing analysis of the role of principal to assist determination of the contribution to academic success. Included in the study are 52 references, 26 tables, and 3 figures. Two appendices present the questionnaire and the accompanying cover letter. (WTH)
