Nationwide questionniare responses from hundreds of administrators constitute the data for this report. Schools must promote health, not only by teaching, but by being advocates of health, demonstrating that health is desirable and possible for all. After a prelude and background, the first chapter examines issues of health education, including underlying concepts, priority issues, definition, health and academic achievement relationships, and the federal role. Chapter 2 focuses on needs and goals on a national level, listing objectives and hazards. Chapter 3 looks at needs and goals locally, outlining goals for curriculum and administration. The fourth chapter examines management and health coordinators, advisory committees, and funding. Chapter 5 focuses on various curricula for health education uses. Chapter 6 looks at staff involvement and training, retraining, and utilization of learning resources. Chapter 7 relates reports from local communities nationwide. Chapter 8 investigates health services and the role of the school nurse. Chapter 9 discusses the role of parents in health programs. The 10th chapter examines the development of staff wellness. Chapter 11 deals with funding, budgeting, and the involvement of business and community groups. Finally, chapter 12 explores the assessment of health education and long-range evaluations. (WTH)
