Determining the effectiveness of a school's programs and personnel, responding to the public's pleas for quality education, finding ways to enhance teaching and learning, and helping parents and the community to cope with the problems of raising children are all major tasks faced by principals. Ten issues of evaluation are considered in these chapters: (1) the premises for effective schools and the factors that make for quality education; (2) an audit procedure examining the principal's vision of the school, school mission and goals, and environment and culture; (3) the principal as instructional leader; (4) the problems of evaluating tenured, experienced teachers and the induction of new teachers; (5) the evaluation of effective curriculum designs, and practices that help the administrator make decisions; (6) the evaluation of student activities programs; (7) the evaluation of pupil personnel services and personnel; (8) the evaluation and improvement of school-community relations and programs; (9) the evaluation of the effectiveness of office, food, and transportation services; and (10) the updating of the content of this second edition, and new ways to evaluate principals' effectiveness in managing the school plant and facilities.
