Drug Dependence and Alcohol-Related Problems: A Manual for Community Health Workers with Guidelines for Trainers.
World Health Organization, Geneva (Switzerland).
This document contains a two-part manual intended to help the community health worker in dealing with drug and alcohol problems within a framework of general health and social care. It was designed to help the community health worker: (1) acquire knowledge and skill in working with families, the community, and individuals; (2) recognize cases of drug or alcohol misuse early in their course; (3) assist in the recovery of individuals with alcohol- or drug-related problems; and (4) help in reducing or preventing alcohol or drug misuse. Part I examines drugs which are misused, how they are taken, what problems they may cause, and what constitutes drug dependence. Separate sections are devoted to assessment of the community, assessment of the individual and the family, helping the individual and the family, and mobilizing the community to combat drug dependence. Part II provides guidelines for trainers of community health workers. It contains sections on developing a curriculum, fostering appropriate attitudes, special skills and how they can be learned, and the role of the community health worker in reducing drug and alcohol misuse. The manual may be used either as part of a training course or as a reference source for health workers themselves. (NB)
