The Co-Op/Disadvantaged Job Success Project. Final Report. Vocational-Technical Education Research Report.
Welch, Frederick G.; Erwin, Michael
The Co-op/Disadvantaged First-Job Success Project was organized to provide inservice training to vocational teachers and cooperative education coordinators who work with inner city disadvantaged youth in the south central region of Pennsylvania. The project was organized in a manner that allowed project staff, co-op coordinators, and teachers to work as a team to investigate the issue of assisting inner city youth in making a successful transition from school to work. Group and one-on-one training was provided in areas such as identification and assessment, training plan development, curriculum modification, job survival skill training, theory class preparation, and evaluation techniques for serving disadvantaged students in the transition period. The vocational teachers, co-op coordinators, and other placement personnel also attended monthly meetings with resource people and selected employers to discuss ways in which to assist students in making a successful transition to work. The project demonstrated that programs to ease the school-to-work transition of inner city disadvantaged youth must begin at the intermediate or even elementary levels, labor laws should be amended to allow inner city youth to acquire job experience before leaving school, more role models for these students should be identified, and schools must enhance their ties with community businesses so as to integrate more disadvantaged students into the workplace. (Appendixes include sample committee agendas and meetings, lesson plan activity reports, and a literature review.) (MN)
