Microcomputers in Transit: A Needs Assessment and Implementation Handbook. Final Report.
Wyatt, Eve; Smerk, George
This handbook describes a practical step-by-step process for introducing microcomputers to small- and medium-sized transit operating agencies. The introductory chapter deals with the objective of buying a microcomputer system, the characteristics of microcomputers, microcomputer software, microcomputer system components, and issues faced in microcomputer implementation. The second chapter discusses the ad hoc, black box, rational, and incremental approaches to computerizing a transit operating system. The final three chapters deal with the following phases of automating a transit system: planning and strategy (reviewing tasks, exploring microcomputer applications, assessing software and hardware requirements, and formulating training and support requirements); initial implementation (choosing initial applications, software, and hardware; procuring them; and implementing the automation process); and additional applications (updating the plan, applying development strategies, developing an incremental application, formulating functional specifications, working with a programmer, and managing the system). The section on system management deals with coordinating hardware and applications, setting priorities, developing documentation standards, and providing ongoing support to system users. A 10-page glossary and annotated reference list are appended. (MN)
